There are only 4 different types of runs… yet so many sets?
There are four different types of runs that you can complete over the week. They are as follows.
- Long Run
- Intensity Run – Tempo, Interval, Fartlek, Build Run
- Recovery Run
- Soul Run – run for fun and enjoyment
There are then four sub options with intensity runs.
- Tempo – running at a tempo effort, this is a particular intensity level
- Interval – hard running interspersed with recovery periods
- Fartlek – running continuously but at various speeds (speed play)
- Build Run – gradually increasing the speed at which you run
Lastly these can all be completed on the flat, uphill, downhill or a combination. Each giving various benefits to your fitness and challenging you in different ways.
To complete the picture we need to understand that additionally you can mix and match within the runs. For instance completing a tempo block within a long run.
Collectively the above give you endless opportunities to vary your training depending on what your goal race is, focus of the set (discussed next week) and what you personally need to develop to achieve your personal best performance.
If you are yet to try one of the above maybe its time to mix up your running and try a different style of run set.
Make sure to vary your training regularly to allow you to maintain motivation, reach your personal best and have more fun on the trail.
Enjoy the adventure.
Run, smile and have fun!
